U.S. Government & Politics:
Marriage Equality USA
Marriage Equality USA is an organization trying to have all marriages equal, regardless of sex. The organization has been on this mission since 1996. There are many different definitions out there for the word marriage. Some include the words “between man and woman” but there are some that do not. There are various reasons as to why marriage shouldn’t and doesn’t have to be between man and woman.
There is an amendment, which talks about the separation of church and state. Originally, marriage was a religious idea that has now become quite a general tradition to most; people do not need to be religious in order to get married. However, considering men and women who do have the right to marry where ever and whenever have more than taken advantage of such a beautiful and sacred tradition, maybe there should be some thought put into whether or not those people should have the right to be married. The government shouldn’t have the right to decide who someone loves or who someone is going to spend the rest of their life with whether they have felt that for five minutes or five years. Obviously the LGBT community is fighting for marriage to be equal so they can have the right to be married to the person they love, not to abuse the tradition.
In US history, we’ve had many different laws develop concerning civil rights and equal rights. There were certain races in the past who were treated awfully based on their skin color although I realize not all gays or lesbians are treated nearly as bad but they are being treated very unequally. People shouldn’t be treated any differently because of their sexual orientation; being judged based on your sexual orientation is just as absurd as being judged based on your skin color. Someones sexual preference doesn’t depict the kind of person they are, it’s completely irrelevant. A free country should be open to someone being in love with his or her same sex. Gays and lesbians should be treated just the same as heterosexuals.
As I stated before, the government shouldn’t have a say in marriage but if they do feel they need to be involved they need to take quite a few things into consideration. Although same sex marriage may not be recognized everywhere, there are still gay and lesbian couples who do live together and have lived together for years which in some families is or isn’t accepted; for example, the couple may have bought property together and if they have then if one passes away or something tragic happens and the family doesn’t agree with their lifestyle then the family could take legal action. Also, if one of the partners becomes sick or has a medical emergency, the other partner has no say or has no right legally at the hospital to know what’s going on with their loved one. If these people are together and live with one another they should have the right to choose who certain information is shared with.
All in all, the LGBT community deserves the same marital rights as any man or woman. They shouldn’t be treated any differently. It would be great to see equality in this country for all communities whether you are part of it or not or fall into the community, equality is a great thing for all.

Reflection: I really enjoyed writing this paper! I liked the fact she gave us free range to pick what issue is closest and most important to us which will always help a paper become that much better!
