The Romans in Bath
The Romans arrived in Bath the year of 44 AD. The Roman Baths in Bath is the best preserved bath site. The baths are dedicated the Sulis Minverva, the goddess. Many of the Romans came to these baths to be healed. They believed these baths were baths of the gods and could heal whatever was wrong with them. They also believed the baths could make them look younger. Hot Springs aren't common in Britain which may have been why the Romans believed it to be from the Gods. The Roman presence wasn't long lived in Britain, by the end 4th century the Roman rule had depleted which made them leave. For the longest time people weren't aware of the hot springs in Bath. When they were finally discovered, they cleaned up the site, built Roman statues and reopened the baths in 1897.
In the exhibit part of the baths they talked of the Romans and their belief in the gods. One of the main parts of the exhibit stuck out to me. People would write curses for Sulis Minerva to cast on people for doing them wrong, mostly stealing. There were also many parts of the original temple in the exhibit. The site of the Roman baths were beautiful even though the water was a green like color. It is so interesting to hear the way the Romans were towards their Gods. They had so much faith and believed they could do anything. There was also a display of all of the different coins, coins I'd never heard of in the baths which were used as offerings to the Goddess. The statues on the terrace may have been built later on however it was very fitting. I didn't even feel as if I were in England, it felt like I was back in Italy.
