My Favorite Experience
I'm not one to really enjoy museums typically. I would much rather go to the site of an event rather than a museum however the Imperial War Museum in London was a one of the most enjoyable educational experiences I had in England. We were given about two hours to walk through which I thought would be enough time but showed up about twenty minutes after we were supposed to meet. Every exhibit was put together so incredibly there was no way someone could rush through that museum. I started out looking at the War on Terror display which talked about some of the soldiers who had survived close calls. One soldier had a Camelbak on and when he went to take a drink there was nothing coming out, he took it off and realized he had been shot at about three times. He didn't even feel the impact of the shots. That soldier is so fortunate.
I had only been in the building about ten minutes and was already feeling so grateful for these men and women who give up so much to protect their countries. Another exhibit I found myself spending a lot of time in was "A Family in Wartime". I had to be in there for the educational purpose however I did enjoy it. I talked about it in the other part of my e-Portfolio but I didn't realize everything that came along with the war. I had no idea there was such a shortage on everything. They were mending all of their clothes, they had to conserve everything! Posters were hung everywhere so people were reminded to mend, conserve, etc. In this world today, people wouldn't know what to do if they had to do that. Women had to take the jobs that men left when they went off to war. These women showed everyone they were capable of being independent and could handle "man's work". I love knowing that. Women back then and even today aren't given the credit they deserve.
The exhibit I was most excited for was the Holocaust exhibit. Obviously, it's a rough subject but like many other people in this world I find it very interesting. I expected to get through the rest of the museum a lot faster than I did so I left the Holocaust for last which I wish I wouldn't have. I ended up having to rush through the last little bit. It was so incredibly detailed. It went touched on every little bit. I was very pleased with how well they put it together. The event never fails to make me upset, it's just so hard to believe there were and still are people like that in this world. “No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive.”- Gandhi.
