Love in the Media- Final Project
With artists like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber who are taking up a lot of hollywood’s spotlight, not only with their personal lives but also with their music. There are a lot of unrealistic love songs. Don’t get me wrong, they may be young and I’m sure they’ve experienced love or something they thought may have been love however, their songs aren’t very accurate. Like the Taylor Swift song I used as an example, she talks about their love being like a prince and princess which in the real world everyone knows there isn’t a such thing as a perfect love. They is always ups and downs but a lot of the time that’s what makes the love so great!

I love The Beatles song, “I want to hold your hand.” The song is just not very practical; there aren’t very many people who are just around to hold your hand. They always want something more. Now, if it were a girl singing this song, maybe it’d be a bit different. I don’t mean to come across sexist but there are not very many guys that just want to hold a hand. This may have been a different time but there is still media that portrays sweet innocent love like this.

Red Ragtop by Tim McGraw, a very controversial song. Although many people did not like the story of this song, it does happen more than some would like to recognize. It’s a definite reality. There are many couples who do become pregnant and realize they wouldn’t be able to take care of the baby properly and believe that an abortion may be for the best. There aren’t many songs or movies that talk about abortion, which is something a lot of people face but no one talks about.

In the song, they talk about a relationship that is back and forth which seems to be something that is seen a lot in real life. It really isn’t seen in the media. Love this pain by Lady Antebellum and Tomorrow by Chris Young are both very good examples of this kind of love relationship.

Legalization of Same-sex Marriage
Same sex marriage has been a controversial topic for quite a while now. It’s very interesting to see how many people are still against this even though it’s now 2011. There are still very few states that will recognize same-sex marriage or allow it. We’ve come a long way however it must not be long enough.
There aren’t many states in the U.S. who recognize or have made same-sex marriages legal. Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, and Washington D.C. are some of the states who will issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. There are some states that recognize same-sex marriages from other states. Hawaii, Illinois and New Jersey allow civil unions and California, Oregon, Nevada and Washington allow domestic partnerships. There are many states that do have laws saying marriage is between man and woman which Utah is one of those states which may not be the case in many people’s eyes.
It would be incredible to see every state allow civil unions and same-sex marriages. There seems to be a lot that needs to happen before more to states allow this to happen. There don’t seem to be any real legitimate arguments for this not to happen. Some say it would have an economic impact however it doesn’t seem to be anything that would dramatically affect the economy. The people in the GLBT community are being treated unequally. They seem to be the only community who hasn’t been accepted by our government. Our nation has surpassed other prejudices, what’s the difference with this one? Obviously there is still prejudice in this world and it will never be perfect but personally, I don’t see any issue with allowing civil unions and same-sex marriages.
It still amazes me how differently the people in the gay community are still treated. It’s ridiculous there are actually people who seem to think gay and lesbians can go to therapy and suddenly have a different or “normal” sexual orientation. This is one issue that shouldn’t be for debate. There are many things out there that are worse than legalizing same-sex marriages, hopefully it will come in time though and people will realize it’s not such a bad thing.
By not legalizing same-sex marriages, it is in a way taking away some people’s freedom. People should be able to choose who they love and enjoy their life with them in this free country. A person should be able to love who they love without the government or other people telling them it’s right or wrong. They are entitled to their opinion however it doesn’t always make it right. I would love for this to become legal; it would be so nice to see such a strong and well-deserving community happy!

Understanding Rape
I’ve never had to deal with anyone that has been raped at least I don’t know if there is someone around me who has. It’s a terrible experience for anyone who has had to deal with it. It’s absolutely disgusting and wouldn’t wish it upon anyone! It’s crazy to think how many misconceptions there are about rape as well as how many people don’t report what they’ve gone through. A lot of things surprise me about rape especially after reading the book. It’s unbelievable to think people actually use this as a way to destroy someone like how it’s used in war.
I honestly have no idea how I would feel or react if someone close to me were raped. I would obviously feel awfully bad. I would have no idea in how to comfort them or make them feel okay which that is all I would want to do is. I’m sure going through such a traumatizing experience would change a tremendous amount of things in their day to day life and their future. They may feel scared to do anything or be in their home by themselves, they may even isolate themselves and probably won’t trust many people any longer. They may even end up having relationship problems with their present or future significant other. It’s hard to tell, I think in some cases it would depend on the victim.
I would love to help in anyway I could. I was would listen as well as I could. I would hope they would realize they need to report what had happened if they hadn’t already. I know good things don’t tend to come out of an awful experience like rape but it would be nice if victims could help others get through it. I know it couldn’t be the easiest thing to overcome but it just makes one that much stronger if and when they do. I would have a hard time knowing someone I really cared about had to go through that and I would feel worse if they couldn’t talk to me about it or even just talk about it in general.
I knew a lot about the general stereotypes but it still seems to astound me every time I hear these things. I know they talked in the book about there are some women who do mean yes when they say no and there are some who may enjoy a little pain and such for sexual arousal but there is always a fine line. There shouldn’t be a man who assumes they do mean yes when they say no, they should take the time to get to know them better before they can determine that. I don’t believe someone can tell by the looks of another if they’re a rapist or not or if they’re mentally ill. I do believe there is probably something wrong with them if they’re committing such a terrible crime. It’s horrible knowing there are people out there who can witness someone in a terrible.
It would be nice to see rape just disappear altogether. Some forms of rape I don’t think should always be considered as rape like statutory rape. It should all just depend on the circumstances. I would love to see more people coming forward and coping with their bad experience.
